Despite the disruption of the Coronavirus pandemic, we ran two rounds of Launchpad support in 2020, expanding to support artists and industry professionals throughout Yorkshire. We even managed to support some artists to perform live in March.

Here are some facts and figures about our support programme in 2020.

  • Launchpad received 303 applications, comprising 763 individuals.

  • We supported 46 artists throughout the year, comprising 107 individuals, through a combination of industry advice, funded recording and live performance opportunities.

  • We created opportunities for 28 artists to perform live at festivals, or as part of live streams, in partnership with Inner City Electronic, Millennium Square, Leeds Christmas Lights Switch On, Salémango Festival, Oporto and Leeds United FC, with a total online audience of over 100,000.

  • 41% of all applications to Launchpad, 60% of supported artists and 50% of supported projects featured a woman, or someone from a marginalised gender.

  • 9% of all applications, 11% of supported artists and 16% of supported projects were Black / Black British.

  • 5% of all applications, 2% of supported artists and 15% of supported projects were Asian / Asian British.

  • 8% of all applications, 6% of supported artists and 14% of supported projects were of Mixed Ethnicity.

  • 51% of those that applied to Launchpad are aged 25 or under, and 62% of supported artists and 33% of supported projects fall into this age group.

  • 6% of all applicants stated they had a disability, with 8% of supported artists and 4% of supported projects.

  • 14% of all applicants stated they were Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or other, with 14% of supported artists and 11% of supported projects.

As well as support from our own funded activity over the last 18 months, 12 of our supported artists and projects have gone on to receive in excess of £50k in funding from sources including Help Musicians, MOBO Awards, Youth Music & Arts Council England.

For 2021, we are revising our definitions and descriptors for equal opportunities monitoring, as we know there are more appropriate ways to capture some of the data recorded above, and describe the individuals we work with.
