Tony Morley
Managing Director - The Leaf Label
Tony Morley has run The Leaf Label since 1995. The label sprang from his activities as DJ, writer, club promoter and press officer (for 4AD) in the early 90s, and initially began as a hobby, moving to a full-time job in 1997, alongside his own PR agency.
Initially based in South London, the label relocated to Yorkshire in 2006. Morley also serves as a Director of the Association Of Independent Music.
Now in it's 30th year, The Leaf Label has always operated completely independently, with an efficient DIY ethos, a wide variety of music, and a strong visual aesthetic.
The Leaf Label’s impressive international catalogue is simultaneously pioneering and timeless, with enough warmth, melody, playfulness and passion to distinguish Leaf from its contemporaries.
From the first release (a Boymerang 12”), The Leaf Label has worked with artists from around the world, including Caribou (Canada/UK), Efterklang (Denmark), Colleen (France), Murcof (Mexico), A Hawk And A Hacksaw and Julia Kent (USA), Susumu Yokota (Japan), Sarathy Korwar (India/UK) and The Comet Is Coming, Polar Bear (both nominated for The Mercury Prize), Warmduscher, and Keeley Forsyth, all from the UK.
Among the current roster, which includes Snapped Ankles, Decius, Craven Faults and The Sick Man Of Europe, there is little to suggest a common musical thread, and yet the artists are bound together with an understanding of aesthetics and a strong mark of individuality and timelessness. Leaf continues to evade classification and build on its enviable reputation.
